GeoAI and the Law Newsletter
Keeping geospatial professionals informed on the legal and policy issues that will impact GeoAI.
This special edition of the newsletter is focused on an October 16 notice from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) seeking comments on issues related to the U.S. Federal Government’s collection, processing, maintenance, use, sharing, dissemination, and disposition of commercially available information (CAI) containing personally identifiable information.
This request for information (RFI) is very important to the geospatial community as CAI is defined as “any information or data about an individual or group of individuals, including an individual's or group of individuals' device or location, that is made available or obtainable and sold, leased, or licensed to the general public or to governmental or non-governmental entities.” It is also notable from an artificial intelligence (AI) standpoint, as the RFI was issued in connection with the implementation of the October 2023 Executive Order 14110, Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence. Executive Order 14110 discusses in detail how AI can exacerbate privacy risks.
Companies that sell any type of geospatial information to the U.S. Government should consider reviewing and responding to the RFI by the December 16 due date.
I have run the RFI thought NotebooksLM (Google account required). For those who are not familiar with NotebooksLM, it is an AI tool that can turn written text into podcasts, with AI generated voices. While it can make mistakes, it generally provides a useful high-level summary of a document.
